This was my first hot pot experience and it was AMAZING! The staff were not very patient with us, we clearly had no clue what to do and they kept barking orders at us which was kind of hilarious. Shame on us for not knowing the protocol (we were clearly the only ones, most other customers were Asian). But they know their stuff and do it very efficiently! The food was incredible - only wish we had this in Asheville. Will definitely come again when passing through!

TL;DR - Oden Spicy Hot Pot is a solid, affordable spicy hot pot spot where you pick your own ingredients and soup base, and they cook everything in the back for you. The ingredients are mostly frozen and the atmosphere/service are pretty basic, but I still like the price and food quality enough to give it 4 out of 5 stars. This place recently changed its store name, but the menu and options seem to be the same. Somehow it feels busier now, so maybe the restaurant is slowly gaining traction. I'm glad to see that, because it is a pretty practical spot when you want something filling and customizable. For food, the setup is simple: you choose your ingredients and soup base, then the price is based on weight. I do think most of the ingredients are frozen, and I would guess the soup base is pre-made too, but for the price, I still think the quality is good. If you order more than 1.5 pounds and pay cash, you can get a free drink, which is a nice little deal. Atmosphere is just okay, around 3/5 for me. Service is also around 3/5. Checked out this reasonably priced build-your-own hotpot spot in Duluth…This isn’t AYCE but an “all you can fit in your bowl,” priced by weight at $13.99 per pound -Grab a green bowl and tong -Load up on meats, noodles, seafood, and veggies -Don’t forget the cute heart-shaped egg to top it off -Weigh your bowl and choose your broth and and level of spice! They clip a number to your bowl, hand you a tag, and once it’s cooked, they bring it right to your table. There’s also a small sauce station where you can mix your own dipping sauce. I went with the spicy beef broth (medium spice) and I thought it was perfect and quite flavorful.

Choose your toppings, have them weighed, and then pick your soup or stir-fry style and spice level. From mild to super spicy, it’s perfect for anyone. I really appreciate that the spices add great flavor without any bits you have to chew – no hidden surprises! It’s always busy in the evenings, but totally worth it.

Great spot if you're looking for a quick and affordable hot pot fix. The interior is impressively clean, and I actually prefer this style over traditional shabu-shabu restaurants. The broth is rich and a bit on the oily side, but it’s packed with flavor. It’s a great value for the price, and I love being able to customize my bowl exactly how I want it!
